Why Combining Family & Senior Portrait Sessions Just Makes Sense
Senior year is a BIG deal. It's the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. For many families in Gilbert, AZ, and across the East Valley, it's also a moment when everyone suddenly realizes... Wow, time really did fly by.
One minute you're packing lunches and tying shoes... the next minute you're helping your senior fill out college applications.
And that's exactly why I often recommend combining Senior Portraits with a Family Session.
Senior photos celebrate your graduate, but adding the whole family into the mix tells a bigger story, the story of the people who helped them get there.
Celebrate the Senior...and the Family That Got Them Here
Senior portraits are a milestone. They capture that moment where a teenager is stepping into adulthood, and the future is wide open. As I've said before in other posts, senior sessions are really about celebrating a life stage and remembering who someone is right now.
But there is another side to this moment that deserves to be captured.
Mom and Dad, who supported them for 18 years.
Siblings who grew up alongside them.
The family dynamic that shaped who they are.
When we combine senior portraits with family photos, we create something much more meaningful - a complete story.
And trust me... years from now, those images together will mean the most.
One Session, More Memories
Another reason families across the East Valley love combining sessions is simple: efficiency.
Instead of scheduling separate family photos and senior portraits, we can capture both in a single relaxed session. We typically start with:
- Individual senior portraits
- A few fun or creative senior shots
- Immediate family photos
- Parent + senior moments
- Sibling photos
Then we wrap up with some relaxed lifestyle moments that feel natural and authentic.
Lifestyle photography is one of my favorite approaches because it captures real interactions and genuine expressions rather than stiff poses.
Those are the moments that feel real.
Locations Around Gilbert, AZ & The East Valley
The East Valley has some incredible backdrops for portraits. Desert sunsets, tall grasses, lakes, trails... Arizona really does have a little bit of everything.
Depending on the vibe you want, we can choose a location that fits your family and your senior's personality.
Some seniors want bold desert vibes.
Some want greenery
Some want urban textures or something totally creative.
This is where the planning gets fun.
Before your session, we'll talk about outfits, location, and how to design a session that feels like YOU.

Make It a Celebration
Senior year goes fast. Faster than you think.
One moment you're scheduling graduation announcements...and the next moment they're packing for college or starting their next adventure.
Photographers are preservationists by nature - we freeze moments that would otherwise disappear with time.
Combining a family session with senior portraits allows you to celebrate the milestone while also capturing the relationships that matter most.
And honestly... It's one of my favorite types of sessions to photograph.
There's pride.
There's excitement.
Sometimes there are happy tears.
And those emotions create the best images.
