Senior Portraits: "What Should I Wear?"
Planning for your senior portraits can be both exciting and overwhelming. The biggest question you might ask yourself during the planning is, "What should I wear?"Senior year is a meaningful milestone, and your portraits should reflect not only this moment in time, but who you are right now and where you're headed next.
What you wear plays a huge role in how your photos turn out and how you feel during your session. The right outfit helps you feel confident, comfortable, and totally yourself. When you feel good, it shows in every single photo.
My goal is to help you decide how to style yourself for your senior portraits in a way that feels natural, timeless, and completely authentic to you.
Start With Who You Are
The beginning stages of figuring out what to wear depend on how you define yourself. What makes you feel confident? Try to pick a style that is wholly you, not just the current trend that will fade with time.
Ask yourself:
- Do I prefer dressy or casual?
- Do I love bold fashion, or do I lean towards classic, simple styles
- What outfits make me feel most comfortable?
- Are there pieces I always get compliments on?
When seniors show up feeling like themselves, their confidence shines naturally. A confident senior photographs so much more authentically than an uncomfortable senior. Remember, this photoshoot is about who you are.
What is your style?
Do you consider yourself to have a more classic & polished style? Maybe consider:
- Neutral or solid-colored dresses
- Tailored pants or dark denim
- A simple blouse or fitting top
- A structured blazer
- Minimal jewelry
Maybe you think of yourself as more relaxed & casual. If so, you might think about wearing:
- Well-fitted jeans
- Soft sweater or flowy tops
- Casual sneakers or ankle boots
- Light layering pieces
Is bold & trendy more your style? Let your style shine by including some of these:
- Statement sleeves
- Unique textures
- Vibrant colors
- Fashion-forward pieces
The key is balance. If one piece makes a statement, keep the rest of the look clean and cohesive, so the focus stays on you.
Choosing The Right Colors
Arizona light is bright and warm, so color choice matters. Certain tones complement the natural landscapes around the East Valley better than others.
Colors That Consistently Look Amazing
- Cream and ivory
- Sage green
- Dusty blue
- Rusty and terracotta
- Soft blush
- Mustard
- Deep emerald
These tones work beautifully in desert backdrops and greenery throughout the East Valley.
Colors to Avoid (or Use Carefully)
- Neon shades
- Extremely bright white in harsh sun
- Large logos or graphics
- Very busy patterns
Subtle patterns can work well, but tiny, high-contrast prints can become distracting on camera. When in doubt, solid colors are always a safe and flattering choice.
How Many Outfits to Bring
I recommend bringing 2-3 outfits to your photoshoot. This will provide some variety and a good sampling of who you are. Let's be honest, you probably don't wear a button-up shirt or a fancy dress everywhere you go. We want to make sure we capture the best and most accurate version of who you are during this incredible season of life.
Outfit One: Elevated & Dressy
This is your polished, standout look, often used for graduation announcements and framed prints.
For girls:
- A long, flowy dress
- A fitted midi dress
- Heels, wedges, or dressy sandals
- Styled hair
For guys:
- A dress shirt,
- A blazer
- Dark denim or slacks
- Dress shoes
Outfit Two: Casual & Comfortable
This outfit should reflect your everyday personality. These are ones you will cherish because they are the most relaxed and true version of yourself.
- Jeans & a tucked-in top
- Clean sneakers
- a lightweight jacket
- Natural hairstyle
Outfit Three: Sports/Club/Boots/Hat/Etc.
This outfit tells the story of your senior year. Who you are outside of school, and what you spend your time doing and thinking about.
These outfits might include some of the following elements:
- Sports uniforms (especially for seniors in East Valley athletics)
- Dance outfits
- Band instruments
- Letterman jackets
- college sweatshirts
- Hobby-related props
Accessorize with Intention
Accessories should enhance your look, without overpowering it.
If you are wearing jewelry, consider small hoops or studs, delicate layered necklaces, or minimal bracelets. You want to avoid oversized, overly reflective pieces.
Consider adding layers; they can add dimension and give you quick variety without a complete change. Some layers that look great include: denim jackets, cardigans, blazers, and lightweight scarves.
Shoes play a surprisingly important role in your shoot. Without detracting from the main focus, you want to make sure they improve and enhance your overall polish. When possible, avoid wearing footwear that is overly worn or distracting.
Consider the following when selecting your shoes:
- Clean sneakers
- Neutral sandals
- Dress shoes
- Coordinated boots
Hair & Makeup Tips
It's time to pamper yourself! Professional hair and makeup are encouraged, especially for seniors, but not necessary.
Makeup Tips
- Choose matte foundation to reduce shine
- Add slightly more blush than usual (the camera softens it)
- Avoid SPF-heavy products
- Bring touch-up essentials
Hair tips
- Avoid drastic haircuts right before your session
- Choose styles that allow natural movement
- Bring a brush or comb
- Keep it ture to your everyday look
The goal is to look like yourself - just slightly polished.
Be Prepared
Preparing for your session can start earlier than the morning of your session. Consider taking these steps a week or so before your photoshoot to ensure you are ready.
- Steam/iron + hang outfits
- Remove tags
- Clean shoes
- Schedule hair/nail appointments
- Try on outfits in full (including shoes and undergarments)
- Make sure outfits cover any tan lines from sunbathing
- Avoid spray tans when possible
Being prepared reduces stress and helps you feel comfortable and confident during your session.
